Rigged Elections in Somaliland: Mounting Evidence

For too long, Somaliland has been trying to appeal to the international community as a nation that fulfilled the required conditions for a nationhood, but the local council election on 28 November 2012 was an agonizing kick in the gut to that long sought struggle. The fundamental integrity of Somaliland’s first election under the ruling party has been compromised and as all the facts on the ground are pinpointing, the president’s office was the prime instigator that rigged the entire election process.

To divert the attention from his ill intentions, the president of Somaliland, Mr. Silanyo, used old dirty tricks borrowed from his like-minded corrupted politicians’ playbook such as disseminating political bogymen to speak on behalf of him and to stonewall the fact searching reputable members in the nation. Mr. Silanyo’s administration does not realize the adverse effect that this election will have on his legacy and the unfathomable fracture that this will have in the country.

On the other hand, Somaliland National Election Commission (NEC) miserably failed to properly monitor the election process and rather turned blind eye to the concerned citizens’ outcry from Zaila to Taleh who have been repetitively asking them to address Kulmiye’s utterly disgusted fraud and vote manipulation. To add insult to the injury, the chairman of election commission, Essa Yusuf Mohamed aka Hamari, falsely  clears his throat and denied any wrong doings. Despite his gaffe and gross negligence, Mr. Hamari arrogantly dismissed the raised concerns of some Political parties including Xaqsoor. The long suspected and the scuttlebutt that Mr. Hamari is in bed with Silanyo now bubbles to the surface so everyone to see. Besides being co-conspirator with Mr. Silanyo, Mr. Hamari’s selective and unwarranted cancellation of specific ballots that favors certain political parties speaks volumes.

Disastrously, this was the most corrupted election in Somaliland’s history and the current administration goes down in history as the ultimate spoiler of the national cohesion.  Make no mistake, the government and the NEC betrayed the sacred responsibility that the people have entrusted on them.

It is no secret that there was not a fair and free election and therefore we are condemning, in the strongest terms, the government, for stealing the votes and the NEC for failing to impartially conduct the local council election process.
